Rosin is a very important chemical raw material, widely used in various industrial sectors. Its main uses are as follows:

1. Soap industry
Rosin is steamed and boiled together with soda ash or caustic soda to form rosin soap. Rosin soap has a strong cleaning power, is easily soluble in water, can dissolve grease and is prone to foaming. Rosin is sticky and can prevent soap from cracking or going rancid and deteriorating.

2. Papermaking industry
Rosin is used as a papermaking glue in the papermaking industry. Rosin and caustic soda are used to make sodium rosin soap, which is the sizing compound. When the sizing compound is mixed with pulp and alum is added, the rosin becomes free resin acid particles insoluble in water and adheres to the small fibers. When the pulp is rolled and heated on a drying cylinder, the rosin softens and fills between the fibers. This process is called "sizing" or "applying sizing". After the paper is "glued", its water resistance can be enhanced, ink penetration can be prevented, strength and smoothness can be improved, and elasticity can be reduced.

3. Paint and coating industry
Rosin is readily soluble in various organic solvents, and it is easy to form a film with a lustrous appearance. It is one of the basic raw materials for paints and coatings. The role of rosin in paint is to make the paint bright in color, dry quickly and the paint film smooth and not easy to fall off.

4. Ink industry
Rosin is mainly used as a color carrier in printing inks and enhances the adhesion of the ink to paper. If rosin is not used in the ink, the printed ink marks will have a dull tone and be blurry.

5. Adhesive industry
Adhesives based on rosin ester and hydrogenated rosin ester are commonly used as hot-melt adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives and rubber tackifiers.

6. Rubber industry
Rosin is used as a softener in the rubber industry and can increase its elasticity. Potassium dismutated rosin soap can be used as synthetic rubber.

7. Food industry
Hydrogenated rosin glyceride, when heated and melted together with natural sugar gum, tree gum, wax, vinyl acetate, etc., and then mixed with flavorings, granulated sugar and pigments, etc., can be made into chewing gum. When slaughtering pigs, cattle and sheep in slaughterhouses, the hair left on the animals' bodies and heads after operation with depilation machinery can be removed with a depilation agent composed of 88-94% molten rosin and 6-12% cottonseed oil.

8. Electrical industry
An insulating oil is prepared by mixing 35% rosin with 65% bright oil and used as a protective film on cables to provide insulation and heat resistance. Rosin is mixed with bakelite and other artificial resins to be used as insulating varnish.

9. Building materials industry
Rosin is mainly used in the building materials industry as a foaming agent for concrete and a binder for floor tiles. Rosin is also used as an adhesive for vinyl asbestos tiles. Rosin mixed with linseed oil, calcium carbide, charcoal, pigments, etc. can be used to make carpet tiles.

10. Prepare the painting fixing solution
Due to the solubility, volatility of rosin, and the principle that it can quickly condense into a "firm and transparent film" after evaporation, to protect the picture and prevent the "sketch" from being rubbed off, painters usually make their own "fixed painting" liquid, that is, one part rosin powder, nine parts alcohol, or xylene solvent ratio. First, put the rosin in a well-sealed glass container, and then add alcohol, Or pour in xylene, cover the lid, and it will dissolve by itself in two days. When in use, shake well and pour it into a spray bottle. Keep it 20 centimeters away from the canvas and spray it evenly onto the canvas. Spray it as soon as it evaporates. It will be completely dry in a few minutes, and you won't have to worry about it being rubbed off in the future. Note: Do not use too much rosin; otherwise, it will "turn yellow and dark "!

11. Violin performance
Because the strings of the violin are made of iron wire, it is highly likely to slip during performance. Rub rosin on the bow 3 to 4 times to increase friction and reduce the possibility of slipping.

12. Flux
Since an oxide film is formed on the surface of metals when they come into contact with air, the higher the temperature, the thicker the oxide layer. This oxide film prevents liquid solder from wetting the metal, just as oil on glass prevents water from wetting the glass. Flux is a specialized material for removing oxide films and is also known as fluxing agent. Flux has three major functions:

1) Removing oxide film: Essentially, the substances in the flux undergo a reduction reaction to remove the oxide film. The reaction products become suspended slag that floats on the surface of the solder.

2) Prevention of oxidation: After melting, it floats on the surface of the solder, forming an isolation layer, thereby preventing the oxidation of the welding surface.

3) Reduce surface tension: Increase the fluidity of the solder, which helps the solder to wet the workpiece.

13. Instrument accessories
Rosin is applied to the bow hairs of instruments such as erhu and violin to increase the friction between the bow hairs and the strings. The best choice is the refined transparent blocky rosin, and the natural crystalline rosin secreted and solidified on the oil pine can also be used as a substitute.
